The first and most important botanical magazine made up of 'figures' of plants and short descriptions. Provides a storehouse of exotics, paralleling the indigenous plants … (Hunt). A delightful work pictorially, never excelled as a periodical, most carefully coloured and a source of lasting interest and information (Dunthorne). Started by William Curtis in 1787 publication still continues.

The beautiful hand-coloured engravings of this periodical are by George Cooke from drawings by George Loddiges, William Loddiges and others. They depict plants growing in the Hackney nursery, founded by Conrad Loddiges and bearing his name. The establishment became famous for its many rare plants. A total of 20 volumes were published from 1817-1833.

All the plants shown were for sale in his nursery and include many exotics. The work is notable for the craftmanship of the Belgian lithographers Severeyns, Stroobant and De Pannemaker, who had mastered the art of colour-printing from stone.
